Toyota's Tech-Infused VR Training Experience
Safety/ Security
Key takeaways
At Toyota, safety is a top priority, especially in manufacturing environments surrounded by heavy equipment. Groove Jones developed a VR training experience to enhance safety practices, using Role-based Learning (RBL). Role-based training is crucial for employees to understand and implement safety protocols in their daily work to prevent accidents.
The VR experience includes different work environments like manufacturing plants, parts distribution centers, and administrative offices. Users encounter unsafe practices, allowing them to observe and interact with virtual coworkers engaging in unsafe behavior, demonstrating potential accidents. This immersive program helps users understand how their actions can contribute to a safer work environment.
The experience is designed to be compatible with the HTC Focus 3 wireless VR headset for a premium training experience, as well as a desktop version to reach a larger audience. Both versions offer the same content, providing flexibility in accessing the training.
Toyota identified specific hazards and user personas, which were incorporated into the VR scenarios. The training modules include role-playing scenarios such as interacting with a manager using a phone in a manufacturing environment, observing improper lifting techniques, handling complaints about potential safety incidents, and coaching team members to create a safer work environment in an office setting.
Groove Jones visited a Toyota manufacturing facility in San Antonio, Texas, to gather audio, photography, and video materials, as well as 3D data for modeling elements in the VR training. The program includes gamification and scoring, allowing Toyota team members to engage with different roles and see how their choices impact safety outcomes. The VR training program aims to start safety conversations, teach de-escalation techniques, recognize adherence to safety rules, develop communication skills, and promote a safe learning environment.
